Food-based dietary guidelines from all over the world recommend consuming dairy on a daily basis as part of a healthy diet. From Europe and Asia through to Africa and the Americas, milk and milk products are perceived as an important source of nutrients to comply with the dietary recommendations for all stages of life.

Food-based dietary guidelines

Food Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDG) translate nutrition science into practical advice on food choices and healthy eating (for instance: eat enough fruit and vegetables). They are used by a country’s competent authorities to provide the general population with a framework for healthy  and safe eating. FBDG often contain specific socio-cultural features that are in line with priorities and cultural habits of a given country.

Dairy Recommendations FBDG

Dairy products are an integrated part of FBDG around the world. On average, the recommended amount of milk and dairy products, such as yoghurt and cheese, is typically about two to three portions a day. Some countries such as China, Turkey and South Africa also include higher dairy recommendations for specific target groups – such as children, pregnant or lactating women –  to reflect their special nutritional needs.
