New FAO report: Food security and nutrition in Europe and Central Asia

On 11 December 2018, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations released a new report. This report offers an in-depth analysis of the progression of countries in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region towards food security and nutrition targets.

In addition it examines linkages between migration, gender, youth, rural development and food security.

Key messages from report:

  • Over the past two decades, food security in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region has improved substantially. However, this trend seems to be stagnating, especially in Central Asia.
  • About 19 million people (~ 14 million adults and 5 million children) suffer from severe food insecurity, which is about 2.1% of the ECA region’s population. This prevalence is far lower than the world average of 9.2%, but is still of concern in some countries.
  • Overall, malnutrition in the ECA region has improved. However, the prevalence of overweight among children and obesity among adults continues to rise, which is now a serious concern. On the other hand, in some places (particularly rural and remote areas) stunting and wasting remain prevalent.
  • Malnutrition in one of the three main forms – undernutrition, overweight and obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies – is present in varying degrees in all countries in the ECA region. Often all three forms coexist, creating what is called the ‘triple burden of malnutrition’.
